Okan Fidan (44) shot dead in his car on Tussendek on New Year’s Eve

On the afternoon of Wednesday 31 December 2014, at around half past three, the 44-year-old Okan Fidan was fired on while sitting in his Volvo estate on Tussendek in Amsterdam-Noord, close to the ring road. He was hit twice in the head. Fidan was still alive when he was taken to hospital, but died there shortly afterwards. He was probably fired on by two men. Fidan was known to police. He had once been the bodyguard of a Turkish criminal who in 1988 shot dead a Turkish trade union leader in Amsterdam-Noord. Later Fidan apparently went into business for himself. In August 2010 he had already been a target: an explosive went off under his BMW on a bridge near the Amstel Hotel. The two occupants survived because the car was armoured. In September 2015 it emerged that before his death Fidan had spoken to detectives, on condition that his statement would only be taken out of the safe once he had died. In that sealed statement he named a Dutch-Turkish drug dealer as the man who ordered or carried out a 2007 killing, and described meetings near a restaurant in Buitenveldert. Prosecutors wanted the statement added to the file of the major Passage contract-killing trial, because in their view it supported the accounts of two crown witnesses.
