Sabrina Roberts (28) stabbed to death at a health centre on Alfred Döblinstraat

On the afternoon of Tuesday 22 July 2014, at about a quarter past one, 28-year-old Sabrina Deborah Roberts was stabbed near the Venserpolder health centre on Alfred Döblinstraat in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. According to prosecutors the stabbing began inside her home; she then fled into the street, where the violence continued. A bystander came to her aid and shouted at passers-by to call the police and the ambulance service; he was then stabbed several times in the back and treated in hospital. Roberts was taken away seriously injured and died shortly afterwards. In all she was stabbed more than twenty times, at three separate moments. Shortly after the stabbing, acting on witness statements, police arrested a 53-year-old man. Experts found that he had an intellectual disability and considered him to have diminished responsibility. On 4 August 2015 the Amsterdam court convicted him of murder and imposed fifteen years in prison plus tbs with compulsory treatment. On 14 November 2017 the Amsterdam court of appeal took a different view: it did not find premeditation proven. It convicted him of manslaughter, attempted manslaughter of the bystander and possession of a flick knife, and imposed twelve years plus tbs with compulsory treatment. The motive has never been clarified in public reporting.
