Aytas Göraler (39) shot dead in front of his family on Slauerhoffstraat

Aytas Göraler (39) was the owner of the nightclub The Sand in Westpoort until 2009. On the evening of Saturday 4 January 2014 he returned from a family dinner and parked his car on Slauerhoffstraat in Slotermeer. At around half past ten he went to take something out of the boot. He was holding his eighteen-month-old son in his arms when a gunman opened fire at close range; at least four shots were fired. Göraler died at the scene. His son was physically unharmed, but his wife and his eight-year-old daughter saw it happen. Police described it as a contract killing. Strikingly, the gunman seemed to know exactly where Göraler would be at that moment, even though he did not normally go there on a Saturday evening — investigators worked on the assumption that the killer had been well informed. In June 2014 a 24-year-old man was arrested and released again a day later. A month after that another 24-year-old was arrested in prison; he too was released after a day. No prosecution followed. Later reporting linked two names to the case: Murat Garki and Baris Önder, childhood friends who were suspected of the killing. Göraler had owned The Sand until 2009; the club had been founded by Önder's father Atilla Önder, and the two men had been business partners. Garki and Önder were never prosecuted. Both were themselves shot dead: Garki on 9 December 2014 in the Rivierenbuurt, Önder on 26 April 2015 in Osdorp. The case remained unsolved.
