Somali asylum seeker dies after a fight in the Vluchtgarage on Kralenbeek

The Vluchtgarage on Kralenbeek in Amsterdam-Zuidoost housed asylum seekers from various countries whose applications had run out. According to fellow residents they lived there under great strain: many nationalities in a building with no hot water, too little food and too little money. On Monday 18 August 2014 a fight there got out of hand, reportedly starting over a can of beer. The Somali asylum seeker Naser Galid fell into a coma. Five days later, on Sunday 24 August, he died at the AMC hospital. Two fellow residents and compatriots were arrested. One of them was said to have struck Galid with a lead bar. Prosecutors held both men equally responsible, arguing that they had gone looking for the victim together to take revenge, and demanded nine years in prison against each. The court acquitted both of manslaughter: the victim had been involved in several fights that day and it could not be established who had struck the fatal blows. One of the two was fined 250 euros for having hit Galid.
