Fernando Cabrera (43) found dead in his home on Frederik Hendrikstraat

The 43-year-old Uruguayan Fernando Cabrera was found dead in his flat on Frederik Hendrikstraat in Amsterdam-West on 7 December 2014; he had probably been killed two days earlier. Cabrera was addicted to drugs and known to police, though for minor matters: in 2009 he had to appear in court for insulting and threatening an officer. A quarrel over drugs probably cost him his life. A witness reported that the victim had argued with another addict two days before he was found. Forensic traces led to the 35-year-old Etiënne L. The two probably knew each other from the Vondelpark, where they belonged to the group of addicts who gathered daily around the open-air theatre. A pair of jeans with Cabrera's blood on them was found at L.'s home. L. continued to deny killing Cabrera; he stated that Cabrera had given him a tattoo and that the blood had got onto his trousers that way. The court gave that little credence. Prosecutors demanded ten years in prison. On 5 November 2015 the court sentenced him to eight years for manslaughter. It acquitted him of murder: it could not establish premeditation, but did find conditional intent to kill.
