Rapper Charlton 'Challa' Wondel (31) shot dead by his neighbour at Nesserland

Charlton Wondel (31) rapped under the name Challa and was part of the well-known Amsterdam hip-hop group Tuindorp Hustler Click. He lived at Nesserland in Amsterdam-Noord, on the same street as the 51-year-old Errol R. Neighbours said the two men had clashed before and that R. generally started drinking and smoking cannabis by eleven in the morning. On the night of Sunday 4 May 2014, at around half past three, R. said he heard 'bickering' in the street. He went outside, armed with a pistol. According to his account he saw a firearm in the waistband of Wondel's trousers. He then fired ten times at the rapper. Why ten times, the judge later asked; R. had no answer. Wondel died in front of Nesserland 38. Prosecutors demanded twenty years for murder. The court found manslaughter and imposed sixteen years. In May 2016 prosecutors again demanded twenty years on appeal. On 16 June 2016 the Amsterdam court of appeal rejected his claim of self-defence: it did not consider it plausible that Wondel had been armed. The appeal court, too, stopped short of murder, because it could not establish with sufficient certainty that R. had had the opportunity to reflect on his decision. It again imposed sixteen years for manslaughter. On 28 November 2017 the Supreme Court declared the cassation appeal inadmissible, making the sixteen-year sentence final.
