Murat Garki (25) killed on Uiterwaardenstraat in the Rivierenbuurt

Shortly before midnight on Tuesday 9 December 2014 the 25-year-old Murat Hüseyin Garki was walking along Uiterwaardenstraat in the Rivierenbuurt. Fire was opened on him from a scooter or a van. He collapsed in front of a café on the corner of Rijnstraat and died. Garki was known to police. Together with his childhood friend Baris Önder — son of a wholesale drug dealer who owned several coffee shops in Amsterdam — he was suspected of, among other things, extorting drug dealers. The two were also linked to the January 2014 killing of Aytas Göraler, the former owner of the nightclub The Sand. Just over four months after Garki, Baris Önder was killed too, in Osdorp. Several scenarios circulated around both murders. One ran through Istanbul, where on 24 December 2014 a Dutch-Turkish drug dealer was shot dead who was a defendant in the major Passage contract-killing trial; investigators examined whether there was a connection. Another scenario, later cited most often, concerned a consignment of ecstasy pills being smuggled to Turkey that was said to have been tipped off. No one has ever been convicted of Murat Garki's killing.
