Stefan Regalo Eggermont (30) shot dead in his car on Conradstraat in a case of mistaken identity

Stefan Regalo Eggermont (30) worked for an events agency and lived with his wife and their two-year-old child around the corner from Conradstraat on the Eastern Islands. On the night of Saturday 12 to Sunday 13 July 2014, at around quarter to two, he was sitting in his blue Fiat Punto when fire was opened on him. Neighbours heard ten to twelve shots. A few minutes later a burning Volkswagen Golf was found on Flevoparkweg. That pointed to a contract killing, but Eggermont had no criminal record and no business or personal difficulties. At the end of September 2014 what had been suspected was confirmed: it was a case of mistaken identity. Eggermont drove the same model of car as Ameur Lkhorf, who also lived around the corner and was the younger brother of Youssef Lkhorf, one of the two victims of the 2012 double killing in the Staatsliedenbuurt. In October 2014 a 26-year-old suspect was arrested; the murder weapon was found at his home. He was himself killed on 7 November 2015, which ended any prosecution. In November 2018 Iliass K. was arrested, already in custody over another killing. In January 2022 he received a life sentence for his part in three murders, including Eggermont's; the court regarded him as the broker who had taken the contract and placed it. The life sentence was upheld on appeal. On 8 July 2025 the Supreme Court let it stand too, rejecting the complaints about the use of the Ennetcom data and about whether a life sentence is compatible with the ban on inhuman punishment. The conviction is now final.
