Robber Remy W. (49) stabbed to death by the owner of the gold dealer Goudspeurders

On Thursday 26 June 2014 the 49-year-old Remy W. walked into the firm Goudspeurders on De Clercqstraat in Amsterdam-West. He was a known customer there. W. told the co-owner that he had a lot of merchandise and asked whether there was enough cash on the premises — in all likelihood to judge whether a robbery would be worth it. He then attacked the owner with a meat fork. The owner managed to wrest the weapon from him and stabbed W. with it. W. died. Only afterwards did it become clear who the victim was. Remy W. had twice been a suspect in murder cases: in 1992 he was prosecuted over the death of his former girlfriend but acquitted on appeal, and in 1998 he beat a barman of an Amsterdam café to death with a stone in a football sock, for which he received a long prison sentence. At the end of December 2014 prosecutors announced that the shopkeeper would not be charged: he had acted in self-defence.
