Former kickboxer Tarik el Idrissi (31) killed in his car on Den Helderstraat

Tarik el Idrissi (31) was for years regarded as one of the best kickboxers in the world in the weight class up to seventy kilos. In 2007 he broke his leg for the second time during a bout at the Amsterdam ArenA; the recovery took a long time and brought a premature end to his sporting career. He was the father of three young children. The family was living temporarily on Kramatweg because their house on Den Helderstraat in Amsterdam-Noord was being painted. On the evening of Thursday 30 January 2014 El Idrissi took his eldest son to football. Later that evening he went to a wok restaurant on Jan Evertsenstraat in Amsterdam-West. At around half past ten a man is said to have got into his grey Opel Astra; the two talked for some time. That stranger has never been identified, though police were keen to speak to him. The next morning El Idrissi drove early to his house on Den Helderstraat to let the painters in. Shortly after he pulled up, at around quarter to eight, two men dressed in black got out of a grey Volkswagen Golf GTI and opened fire. El Idrissi died in his car. The getaway car was found burnt out a kilometre away a short time later. On the television programme Opsporing Verzocht police said El Idrissi was 'deep in the criminal world', without saying what he actually did; speculation ranged from debt collection to drug dealing. More than ten years on, the case is still unsolved.
