Ferdyan (10) stabbed to death by his father in their home on Houtrijkstraat

On the afternoon of Thursday 13 November 2014 ten-year-old Ferdyan came home at half past four to the flat on Houtrijkstraat in the Spaarndammerbuurt. He had not done what he had promised: tidy away his school things. His father, the 46-year-old Agus Hendratno S., became so angry that he took a pillow and a knife. He smothered his son and stabbed him eight times. As S. was led away by police he shouted to bystanders that he was under hypnosis. He later told the court: 'I was irritated too, dizzy and a bit tired.' A psychiatrist found S. to be mildly intellectually disabled. His brother stated that he was not taking his medication. His wife said afterwards that she should have left him, taking Ferdyan with her, to protect the boy. In May 2015 prosecutors asked for tbs. The court imposed tbs with compulsory treatment. An independent inquiry was held into the run-up to the stabbing. It found that the agencies involved with the family had fallen short.
