Kelvin Tettey (32) shot dead during a dance party at club The Sand

On the night of Friday 26 to Saturday 27 September 2014 the Afro Dance XXL party was under way at club The Sand in the Western Docklands. At around quarter past four in the morning an argument broke out on the VIP deck between the 32-year-old Kelvin Tettey and the Nigerian Kehinde Gbolahan S., nicknamed Kenny. What the quarrel was about never became clear, even at trial. Both men were known to police — Tettey for fraud and drugs, S. likewise for fraud — but according to police the row did not stem from their criminal activities. Witnesses said Tettey first struck S. on the head with a champagne bottle. S. then drew a converted alarm pistol and shot Tettey in the chest. Tettey, who came from Ghana, died. S. denied firing; he said he suddenly took a blow to the head, became disoriented and had to run for his life. In March 2015 he was named as a suspect on the television programme Opsporing Verzocht. In April 2016 he presented himself at a police station and was arrested. On 30 March 2017 the Amsterdam court rejected the defence's alternative scenario that someone else had fired, relying among other things on a witness who knew both S. and Tettey and on independent witness statements. Prosecutors demanded ten years in prison; the court imposed exactly that. The mayor closed The Sand indefinitely. Earlier, in January 2014, the club's former owner Aytas Göraler had been killed.
