Remains of Romanian Mirela Mos (30) found in bin bags on Wamelstraat

On Monday 15 November 2004 an environmental police officer found several bin bags on a strip of grass by a car park on Wamelstraat in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, containing the dismembered body of 30-year-old Romanian Mirela Mos. She had come to Amsterdam with her brother on 5 November and had been missing for more than a week. For years the case went unsolved. In November 2016 a cold case team began investigating her death and that of the prostitute Monique Roossien, who had been found naked on an embankment along the Uitdammerdijk in 2003. DNA led both cases to the Amsterdammer Sjonny W., who was also suspected of the death of Sabrina Oosterbeek in 2017, whose body has never been found. On 5 August 2019 the Amsterdam court found only his role in Mirela Mos's death proven and imposed fourteen years and five months plus a TBS order. On appeal, the Amsterdam court of appeal held that he had killed all three women: vulnerable young women, all working as prostitutes, with whom he had sex and whom he then disposed of. It imposed nineteen years and eleven months and TBS with compulsory treatment. In December 2022 the Supreme Court reduced the prison term to nineteen years and eight months because the case had taken too long.
