Mounir Barsoum (55) killed in his car on Jan van Galenstraat, daughter wounded

On the afternoon of Thursday 8 July 2004 the 55-year-old Egyptian Mounir Barsoum, known as Adel, was shot dead at the corner of Jan van Galenstraat and Willem de Zwijgerlaan in Amsterdam-West. He was sitting in his car with his 12-year-old daughter, waiting at a red light, when two young men on a moped pulled up beside him. As he tried to pull away, the passenger got off and fired several aimed shots. Barsoum was killed instantly; the moving car came to a stop against a pole. His daughter was also hit by a bullet and taken to hospital. Barsoum was the brother of Magdi Barsoum, a drug dealer who had worked with Klaas Bruinsma since the 1980s and was killed in the Bloedstraat in March 2002. The brothers ran the coffeeshop Bar Red Light on Oudezijds Achterburgwal together. In early 2004 Mounir had given incriminating evidence in the case against a police interpreter accused of passing secret information to Magdi. Police arrested two people straight away, but as far as is known no one was ever convicted of the murder.
