Johan Herders (50) shot dead by his ex's new partner on Vegastraat

On 19 February 2004 the 50-year-old Johan Herders was killed outside his home on Vegastraat in Amsterdam-Noord. His death followed a long period of tension: Herders had allegedly threatened 42-year-old Herman D., the new partner of his ex-wife, and her systematically. D., who was staying with his girlfriend in the same street, was so afraid that day that he had fetched a revolver from home. In the evening he rang Herders' bell and got no answer; after a phone call in which Herders asked him to come and talk, he walked back to the house. Herders was waiting for him and immediately stabbed him with a large knife in the stomach and chest area and against the head. With blood running into his eyes, D. fired four shots; Herders died at the scene. On 27 August 2004 the Amsterdam court convicted D. of manslaughter and illegal possession of a firearm and sentenced him to five years. It took into account the threats, the stories about Herders' violent past, D.'s own serious injuries and his clean record.
