Lower body of an unidentified woman recovered from the IJ in a sports bag

On 17 May 2004 a barge skipper fished a sports bag out of the IJ in Amsterdam. Inside was the lower body of a woman. According to the police she was between 16 and 35 years old. Examination of the remains showed that she had a tinted skin colour and in life had suffered from anaemia and loss of bone density. The rest of her body was never found and, despite every effort, she has never been identified. In 2023 her case was included in 'Identify Me', a campaign by Interpol, the Dutch police and the television programme Opsporing Verzocht to give a name to female victims of unsolved crimes. Who she was, who killed her and who dumped her body in the IJ remains unknown.
