Ibrahim Anim-Bedwa (34) stabbed to death in Diemen by his girlfriend's ex-husband

On Monday 3 May 2004 a 37-year-old man found 34-year-old Ibrahim Anim-Bedwa on the balcony of his ex-wife's flat on Rode Kruislaan in Diemen; both men were from Ghana and the suspect regarded Anim-Bedwa as his ex's lover. Anim-Bedwa left the flat at once to avoid a confrontation, but the man took knives from the kitchen and chased him onto the gallery. A struggle followed in which Anim-Bedwa hit him with a broom handle. The man stabbed him in the heart; Anim-Bedwa died. The defence argued there was no intent and pleaded self-defence. On 7 July 2005 the Amsterdam court rejected this: the man had knowingly set off in pursuit with a knife in his hand and had himself said he wanted to use it. It did describe the killing as the dramatic end of a fatal confrontation rather than a cold settling of scores, and imposed five years in prison for manslaughter.
