Rob Frisch (62), former owner of gay club DOK, found dead at his home on Overtoom

On 15 September 2004 the 62-year-old Robert 'Rob' Frisch was found dead in his home on Overtoom in Amsterdam Oud-West. He had been killed by suffocation and blows to the head. Frisch was a well-known name in Amsterdam nightlife: in 1981 he and Jac Sminia had taken over the DOK, the legendary gay club in the cellar of the Odeon building on the Singel. They gave the club a lighter, modern interior and in the 1980s made it a popular spot for younger gay men and students in particular, until the DOK closed in March 1989 after financial problems. After the murder, police looked into two men in Romania among others. No one was ever arrested for Rob Frisch's death, and the case remains unsolved.
