Rhae-Ann Mattice (57) beaten to death in a green area on the edge of the Bijlmer

Rhae-Ann Mattice (57) was of Canadian origin and lived in the Bijlmer with her husband and two daughters. She worked in a nearby second-hand shop and was known locally for her charity work. On a stormy evening in June 2004 she was walking her dog in the green area on the edge of the Bijlmer, near the allotments. There she was attacked with extreme violence, including blows to the head with a crowbar, and left in the water, where she suffocated. Because of the storm nobody could have heard her. After she was reported missing, a police dog found her body on Friday 25 June. Her husband was suspected at first but had an alibi. Then a man came into view who knew her from her charity work; he was under a TBS order and had once been convicted of murder in Belgium. He was arrested, but the evidence was insufficient and he was released. According to the annual lists he died of a heart attack on 8 December 2005. The case has never been solved.
