Neighbor finds dead man in corridor with basement storage boxes.

On 30 December 2024 the body of 33-year-old Younes Arsalane was found in the corridor of a basement storage area on Clauskindereweg in Amsterdam-Osdorp. He had been shot several times, including in the head and neck. The suspects are 29-year-old Mahdi J. and 20-year-old Nail el G. According to prosecutors, Mahdi J. and his brother Afif J. were the gunmen, while El G. recruited them and directed the killing from a distance: he allegedly arranged the shooter, sent him to the location and promised him a reward. Afif J. was himself killed when he was shot during a police raid by an arrest team in Rotterdam. Snapchat messages and tapped phone lines examined by prosecutors showed that the suspects had spent the whole day with the victim; in an intercepted conversation shortly after the shooting one of them said, out of breath, "He's sleeping, yes yes yes", which prosecutors read as confirmation of the killing. El G. denies everything. He is also held in two other cases: without realising it he discussed an attack on the criminal Soufiane O. in De Pijp, for a promised 60,000 euros, with an undercover detective, and he allegedly directed a shooting in Fuengirola, Spain, in which 25-year-old Jasin Ajar from Zwolle was killed on 7 December 2024; Afif J.'s DNA was found on the weapon left behind. The pre-trial detention of the suspect who shot a woman in the back during his arrest was repeatedly extended. The motive remains unclear; Arsalane was known in criminal circles and had been linked to a criminal organisation back in 2014, though he was acquitted in that case. As of mid-2026 the full trial had yet to begin.
