Woman dies in kitchen of bakery in Osdorp

Thirty-nine-year-old Mohamed L. confessed in court to stabbing to death 46-year-old Darina Yordanova Sapundzhieva, an employee of a bakery in the Wildeman neighbourhood in Osdorp, on 14 June 2024, shortly after also stabbing a friend in the neck and abdomen. The suspect, from Zaanstad, told the court that he acted while in a psychosis and heard voices in his head ordering him to kill: he first attacked his friend during an evening spent together and then walked into the bakery where the woman was working. She died of her injuries two days after the attack; the friend who was stabbed survived. While L.'s lawyers argued that the psychosis simply befell him, prosecutors contended that he bears part of the responsibility because he knew his excessive use of cocaine and cannabis could trigger such psychotic states. At the trial hearing in November 2025 prosecutors demanded eight years in prison plus TBS with compulsory treatment. Experts concluded that clinical treatment is necessary to protect society and that this can only be achieved through TBS with compulsory treatment; the probation service endorsed that advice.
