84-year-old woman killed in residence

On January 12, 2024, a fatal incident occurred in a residence on Van Speijkstraat in Amsterdam-West, where 91-year-old Jan van B. killed his 84-year-old wife Annie by stabbing her multiple times with a knife. Police found the woman seriously injured following a report, after which she succumbed to her wounds at the scene, and the elderly suspect was immediately taken into custody. During the court proceedings in December 2024, experts determined that the man suffered from advanced dementia and experienced severe delusions, leading him to believe his wife intended to poison or rob him. The Public Prosecutor's Office concluded that he was entirely unaccountable for his actions, as his illness prevented him from recognizing the illegality of his conduct. The Amsterdam District Court found the facts legally and convincingly proven but, following the prosecutor's recommendation, imposed no sentence or measure due to the perpetrator's medical condition.
