Deadly stabbing in Jordaan in broad daylight

On 17 June 2024 a fatal stabbing took place in broad daylight in the Tweede Goudsbloemdwarsstraat in Amsterdam's Jordaan district, in which Mohamed Aoulad Tahar died after an escalation at snack bar Aggie. That evening the eventual victim behaved aggressively and intimidatingly towards bystanders and the snack bar owner, which led to a verbal confrontation with 33-year-old Jerryl L., who had also come to order food. After L. had been intimidated inside and was struck again by the aggressive man outside the door, he drew a knife and stabbed the victim several times in the neck and upper body. The severely injured victim managed to enter a nearby pub seeking help but died there of his injuries; Jerryl L. was arrested shortly afterwards at his nearby home. At the trial in September 2025 he said he had acted out of panic and fear because of an earlier violent incident with the same victim. Prosecutors deemed his response excessive and demanded nine years for manslaughter. The Amsterdam district court rejected his claim of self-defence and sentenced him to seven years: although the victim had struck L. several times and behaved in a threatening and unpredictable way, once the victim turned away to leave there was no longer any immediate unlawful attack — L. nevertheless grabbed him and stabbed him.
