Man dies in Zuid square stabbing

Idriss Azani was on the Hoofddorpplein in Amsterdam-Zuid with friends during the night of 8 to 9 August 2024 when he was stabbed at around 2 a.m. after stepping away briefly to urinate. The attacker ambushed him and stabbed him in the heart with a butcher's knife. Despite resuscitation attempts Idriss died at the scene. The perpetrator fled but was arrested later that morning in a nearby home. In January 2026 the Amsterdam district court sentenced 28-year-old Olton K. to ten years in prison plus TBS with compulsory treatment for murder. The court called the purposeful, targeted manner in which he stabbed extremely shocking and found that K. had singled out the victim because he believed he belonged to a group that was harassing and threatening him. K. was also convicted of possessing child abuse material and a gas-powered air weapon, and must pay Idriss's parents, brother and sister 80,000 euros in damages between them. Prosecutors had demanded sixteen years and TBS.
