Grandmother killed in residence

The tragic events involving Berfin Ç. unfolded in March 2024 within the quiet walls of her 80-year-old grandmother's apartment on James Cookstraat in Amsterdam-West, starting not with a plan for violence but with a secret meeting that spiralled into a nightmare. Berfin, who was 21 at the time, had invited her boyfriend over while her grandmother was present, despite knowing that her traditional family strictly forbade such relationships and would react with severe disapproval if they were discovered. While the couple was together, the grandmother unexpectedly entered the room and caught them, an encounter that immediately triggered a state of extreme panic and blind rage in Berfin as she envisioned the catastrophic fallout within her family. In a desperate and impulsive attempt to silence the situation, in the early morning of 22 March 2024 Berfin grabbed a knife and attacked the elderly woman, stabbing her multiple times in a frenzied assault that left her grandmother fatally wounded. After the stabbing, the gravity of the situation seemed to paralyse the young woman; she remained in the apartment for some time with the body, even making a phone call to her mother in which she initially tried to obscure what had happened before the truth emerged. When police arrived they found a scene that shocked the neighbourhood, and Berfin was arrested immediately. She confessed to the killing. In court the defence argued that she panicked out of fear of how her family would react, and in particular her controlling brother, who forbade her from seeing boys and required her to share her live location with him at all times. Prosecutors demanded eight years; the Amsterdam district court ultimately sentenced Berfin Ç. to six years in prison.
