Homeless man found in the Amstel river

On 22 March 2024 the body of 52-year-old Carlos Luege Gonzalez was found in the water near the Torontobrug by a passer-by. Luege Gonzalez was a homeless Spanish man who spent much of his time at the entrance of a supermarket on Cornelis Vermuydenstraat and often slept under the Toronto bridge on the Weesperzijde. Neighbours and shoppers described him as a modest man who never pressed anyone for money, loved animals and would watch customers' dogs while they shopped; a memorial of flowers and notes was set up at the supermarket where he always sat. Police are treating the death as a homicide and are looking for witnesses who saw anything unusual near the Toronto bridge between 4 and 22 March. The Public Prosecution Service offered a 15,000 euro reward for a decisive tip, but no arrests have been made to date and the case remains unsolved.
