Mohamed el Yakoubi stabbed to death on street in Oost

On Sunday evening 8 December 2024 a fatal act of violence took place near the railway bridge on Pontanusstraat in Amsterdam-Oost, in which 30-year-old Mohamed el Yakoubi was killed. Passing street coaches found the victim at around 10.25 p.m., severely wounded and bleeding heavily next to his fatbike. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts he died at the scene. There was initial confusion about the cause of death, with some speculating a shooting, but police later confirmed that El Yakoubi had been stabbed. On 11 December 2024 detectives arrested 38-year-old Jonathan P. from Amsterdam. At a case-management hearing in March 2025 it emerged that the suspect had confessed to delivering the fatal stab wound after an earlier street confrontation between the two men. According to prosecutors, after that first clash P. went to an Albert Heijn supermarket to gamble, then returned home to change his clothes before going back out with a knife to find the victim. Traces of El Yakoubi's blood were found on the suspect's bodywarmer, which together with CCTV footage and witness statements led to his arrest. The case is moving slowly: after case-management hearings in March and June 2025, another pro forma hearing was scheduled in February 2026 and the full trial had still not taken place. P. has remained in pre-trial detention throughout.
