Bulgarian sex worker killed and her flat on Charlotte de Bourbonstraat set alight

On the morning of Wednesday 25 September 2013 a fire broke out on the third floor of a building on Charlotte de Bourbonstraat in Amsterdam-West which, it later emerged, had been started deliberately. Inside the flat police found the body of K.D. Krasteva, a woman from Bulgaria who worked as a sex worker in the red-light district under the name Jacky. Suspicion quickly fell on her ex-boyfriend, the free-fighter Jason Jermaine Jordan J., born in Utrecht to Aruban parents. He had assaulted her before and stolen 5,000 euros from her, which she had reported to police; she was said to have ended the relationship because he was seeing other women. J. denied any involvement in her death. The charges were rape, strangulation and theft of her phone. Experts saw indications of a personality disorder, but J. refused to cooperate with psychiatric examination. On 17 December 2015 the Amsterdam court sentenced him to twelve years, against a demand of fourteen. He appealed and gained another six months: on 6 August 2018 the court of appeal imposed twelve and a half years, noting that it would have considered fourteen appropriate but was discounting eighteen months because the appeal had taken too long.
