Abdiraham Hussein shot dead outside an entrance of the Haardstee block

Somali asylum seeker Abdiraham Hussein was shot dead on Saturday 7 September 2013 outside entrance 211-219 of the Haardstee block in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. For a long time police had no idea who the gunman was. In August 2014 two men were arrested who had come into view in an investigation into a series of other violent crimes: Jermaine W., from the Antilles, and Ismail L., a Senegalese man living in the Netherlands illegally. On L.'s phone police found a photograph of him holding a firearm fitted with a silencer - according to prosecutors, the weapon used to kill Hussein. The same phone held a picture, taken after the killing, of L. with a white Samsung Galaxy S3 in his hand; Hussein had such a phone, had used it shortly before his death, and it was never recovered. Jermaine W. received twelve years and a hospital order for various violent offences but was acquitted of involvement in Hussein's death. Ismail L. received fifteen years, including for the manslaughter of Hussein. The Amsterdam court of appeal upheld that conviction on 6 November 2020, and on 16 November 2021 the Supreme Court dismissed the cassation appeal. Hussein was probably the victim of mistaken identity.
