Giovanni Slijters (27) stabbed to death by the Sint Antoniesluis after a night out

Giovanni Slijters (27), born in Amsterdam with a mother in Suriname, had been out in the area around Leidseplein on the night of Saturday 20 July 2013. Towards four in the morning he was seen at a bench by the Sint Antoniesluis in the city centre. He walked off along the Snoekjesgracht with a group of men and women, and came back fatally wounded: he had been stabbed, and collapsed beside the bench. The suspect in the case was Zelimir Gavril B., born in 1980. In late September 2014 prosecutors demanded twelve years against him. His lawyer argued that was a sentence better suited to a contract killing than to a late-night quarrel that had got out of hand. Little else about the outcome is public; no judgment has been published.
