Ayla Mintjes (27) shot dead

The 27-year-old Ayla Mintjes was fatally shot on 14 May 2021 in Amsterdam Nieuw-West while she was a passenger in a car leaving a parking garage on Maassluisstraat; from another vehicle, automatic weapons were fired at the car, hitting her, after which she later died in hospital, while the driver remained unharmed and was believed by investigators to have been the intended target, making the case a so-called mistaken identity killing; during the criminal proceedings, several suspects were identified, including Samuel Y. and Jeremia T., who were convicted by the court as the shooters, and Renato F., who was convicted for his involvement in the preparation and organisation of the attack, with the court imposing long prison sentences due to the severity and premeditated nature of the violence. The sentences largely held up on appeal. On 23 July 2024, in the Sonderman mega-case, the Amsterdam court of appeal sentenced the gunman to twenty-two years for murder, attempted murder, setting fire to the getaway car, firearms possession and several counts of criminal damage. The court declined to apply adolescent criminal law and found him to have diminished responsibility.
