Roffinho van Suijdam (17) shot dead in front of his mother's home in Haardstee

On Friday evening, December 23, 2022, 17-year-old Roffinho van Suijdam was shot and killed in front of his home at Haardstee in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, with his then 15-year-old brother witnessing the incident. The perpetrator, a 16-year-old boy at the time with no prior criminal record, shot Roffinho with a loaded, converted firearm following a years-long feud in which the shooter himself had also been seriously threatened and assaulted. Although Roffinho's mother attempted to resuscitate her son on the spot, he died from his injuries. Following the violent incident, a silent march was organized to commemorate the victim. On June 22, 2023, the court in Amsterdam sentenced the perpetrator to 20 months of youth detention, 8 months of which were suspended, for manslaughter because premeditation could not be proven. In addition to the prison sentence, the perpetrator must cooperate with treatment, is banned from entering Amsterdam for two years, and is prohibited from contacting the surviving relatives. He was also ordered to pay damages of over 30,000 euros to Roffinho's mother and 10,000 euros to his brother. A friend who was present during the shooting stood trial at a later date. That case has since been decided. On 25 June 2024 the Amsterdam court convicted the minor friend of complicity in manslaughter and joint possession of a firearm, imposing the maximum term of youth detention, part of it conditional.
