Italian Paolo Moroni (42) stabbed to death in apartment on VOC-kade

Mustapha T. was arrested in early 2022 as the main suspect in the fatal stabbing of 42-year-old Italian software developer Paolo Moroni in his flat on the VOC-kade in Amsterdam. According to prosecutors the two men knew each other and would occasionally meet to use drugs together or have sex, with the suspect regularly receiving money or goods from Moroni. The 38-year-old from Rotterdam was arrested four days after the body was found. The case file shows how extreme the violence was: Moroni had suffered more than sixty stab wounds, some twenty of which struck vital areas in the neck and abdomen, and he died of blood loss. The case drew significant media attention because Mustapha T. was known to social services and had been released from a psychiatric institution shortly before the incident, which led to complex legal discussions about his mental state and the extent to which he could be held accountable. Although the evidence against him was substantial, including security camera footage and forensic traces in the home, the exact circumstances of the explosion of violence remained a subject of legal debate, while Moroni's family in Italy continued to press for justice for the sudden death of the engineer. In April 2023 prosecutors demanded ten years in prison plus TBS with compulsory treatment for manslaughter. Two more instances followed. On 5 July 2024 the Amsterdam court of appeal convicted him of manslaughter and imposed nine years plus a hospital order with compulsory treatment, rejecting the alternative scenario that someone else was the killer. On 7 July 2026 the Supreme Court upheld the conviction but reduced the prison sentence to eight years and six months. The case is now final.
