Rodney Mijnals (41) shot dead in Amsteldorp, Oost

On February 19, 2022, a fatal shooting occurred on Fizeaustraat in Amsterdam-Oost, resulting in the death of 41-year-old Rodney Mijnals and injuring a neighbor's son in the arm. Police found Mijnals on the sidewalk behind his home with a gunshot wound to his chest and various injuries to his head and body; according to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the residence was being used to store and trade drugs. Investigations revealed that 24-year-old Serginnio O. from Almere, the victim's nephew, was present in the home that evening with two others, a fact confirmed by cell tower data, camera footage of his car, and the discovery of the victim's blood traces inside that same getaway vehicle. The case caused significant tension within the family, which even led to a physical altercation between relatives during a court hearing in Alkmaar in August 2022. Although the court could not determine exactly which of the people present pulled the trigger and a 27-year-old co-suspect was acquitted, Serginnio O. was sentenced on Monday, November 18, 2024, to fourteen years and nine months in prison for his involvement in the death of his uncle.
