Skater Casper Verheijen (29) stabbed to death after refusing to buy cannabis near Sloterplas

In early 2022, 29-year-old Casper Verheijen passed away following a stabbing in Amsterdam-Osdorp, which occurred after a physical conflict with three minors that began with a verbal altercation. The court ruled that the fifteen-year-old who stabbed him acted out of "noodweerexces" (excessive self-defense), resulting in a verdict where he was found responsible but dismissed from legal prosecution due to the intense emotional state caused by the violence initiated by Verheijen and his colleagues. On appeal the court went a step further. On 14 December 2023 the Amsterdam court of appeal upheld the minor's plea of self-defence - not excessive self-defence - so that his conduct was held to be not merely unpunishable but justified.
