Hostage-taker Abdel Rahman Akkad (27) run over by DSI operator at Apple Store Leidseplein

On February 22, 2022, 27-year-old Abdel Rahman Akkad held a Bulgarian tourist hostage for hours in the Apple Store on Leidseplein, while threatening dozens of others inside the shop. Following a daring escape attempt by the hostage, Akkad was struck and killed outside the store by an armored vehicle from the Special Interventions Service (DSI), after which the operator received a hero's pin.
