Woman died after an assault in front of her home on Djakartaterras in Amsterdam-Oost

Sofie Kerklaan, a 27-year-old woman from Amsterdam-Oost, was found seriously injured in the early morning of Sunday, 12 November 2017, on the pavement below her apartment on Djakartaterras in the Indische Buurt neighbourhood. She was found at around 02:45 and died shortly afterwards from her injuries, without being able to say what had happened. In the first period after her death, police kept several scenarios open, including a tragic accident, suicide or a crime. Because she was found below her home, investigators also looked into whether she may have fallen from a window. Later, detectives ruled out an accident or suicide and concluded that Sofie had died as the result of a crime. What exactly happened during the night of 11 to 12 November has never become fully clear. Witnesses said they had heard loud voices at Djakartaterras that night, which led police to consider the possibility of an argument or confrontation in which Sofie may have been involved or may have unintentionally become involved. Police also searched for people who had been in the area between around 01:30 and 02:45. At around 01:30, two women were seen dancing near the underpass between Molukkenstraat and Djakartaterras, close to the hippopotamus sculptures. Police later suspected that one of those women may have been Sofie and wanted to speak to the other woman as an important witness. Investigators also searched for a person who walked up the stairs opposite the entrance to Djakartaterras 10-18 at around 02:15, and for a cyclist who rode across Djakartaterras from the direction of Molukkenstraat around the time the emergency call was made. Despite witness appeals, flyers at dance schools and neighbourhood inquiries, as far as is known no one has ever been arrested or convicted for the death of Sofie Kerklaan.
