Oscar Donk stabbed to death at a house party in Zuidoost

Oscar Donk, a 23-year-old man from Amsterdam, was stabbed to death during the night of Saturday 10 to Sunday 11 June 2017 at an afterparty inside an apartment on Scherpenzeelstraat in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. After a night out, he had gone with others to the party in the flat. During the afterparty, an argument broke out over the car key of a leased Range Rover. The suspect, Gianni L., had taken a short drive in the car together with a friend and another man. After that ride, the key turned out to be missing, and the atmosphere quickly escalated. The argument turned violent, and Gianni L. first stabbed a 25-year-old man from Amstelveen several times with a knife. Oscar Donk rushed over to prevent things from getting worse and tried to intervene. While doing so, he was also stabbed by Gianni L. Oscar suffered a deep stab wound to his abdomen and was seriously injured. Emergency services arrived and he was taken to hospital, but he died from his injuries. The other man survived the stabbing but was seriously wounded. Gianni L. was arrested and prosecuted for the manslaughter of Oscar Donk and the attempted manslaughter of the other victim. In the first trial, the Public Prosecution Service demanded eight years in prison and compulsory psychiatric treatment under a TBS order. In April 2018, the court sentenced Gianni L. to eight years in prison and TBS. On appeal, the sentence was increased. On 5 July 2019, the court of appeal sentenced Gianni L. to fourteen years in prison for stabbing Oscar Donk to death and stabbing the other man. The court found that he had used extreme violence during an argument that began over a car key, and that Oscar Donk lost his life while trying to intervene and help someone else.
