Orpheo Gefferie (24) shot dead in The Bank parking garage, Amstelstraat.

The 24-year-old Orpheo Gefferie from Almere, also known by the nickname Boet, was shot dead during the night of 17 to 18 May 2019 in The Bank parking garage on Amstelstraat near Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam. Around 4:20 a.m., after a night out, an argument broke out near the payment machine in the garage, involving several people. According to reports, Gefferie appeared to be trying to calm the situation. The suspects were Erxinio Luntungan, also referred to as Erxinio L., and Darnell T. According to the Public Prosecution Service, CCTV footage showed Darnell T. running to a car to retrieve a firearm and then returning. He then handed the weapon to Erxinio Luntungan. Luntungan shot Orpheo Gefferie from very close range in the neck. Gefferie died shortly afterward in hospital from his injuries. Erxinio Luntungan remained on the run for a long time after the shooting and was only arrested in February 2021 in Valencia, Spain. Prosecutors had demanded up to 15 years in prison for Erxinio Luntungan and 12 years for Darnell T. In March 2021, the Amsterdam court sentenced Erxinio Luntungan to 11 years in prison for manslaughter and Darnell T. to 7 years in prison for complicity in manslaughter, because he had retrieved and handed over the weapon. The court did not find it proven that there had been a prior plan to kill Gefferie, and therefore did not classify the case as murder. The two men were also ordered to pay the victim’s relatives more than €80,000 in compensation. Later, Het Parool reported, based on conversations with relatives, that there may have been a longer-running conflict behind the shooting involving an old dispute with a criminal from Zuidoost over a lost bet, but the court ultimately assessed the case legally as manslaughter rather than a premeditated murder.
