Jay-Ronne Grootfaam (18) stabbed in front of Florijnflat. Dies a day later.

Jay-Ronne Steven Grootfaam, an 18-year-old rapper from Amsterdam-Zuidoost known as RS, TrappyDemon or Almighty RS, was stabbed on Tuesday evening, 3 September 2019, near the Florijn apartment block in the Bijlmer. He was part of the drill rap group FOG, which had been involved in a long-running conflict with the rival Kikkensteinbende. At around 19:15, members of both groups happened to run into each other near the flat. According to the district court and later the court of appeal, there had been no pre-arranged confrontation that evening, but the situation escalated quickly because several of those involved were carrying knives or machetes. Camera footage showed Jay-Ronne Grootfaam and Yamanney A. facing each other in the hallway of the Florijn flat, both holding large machetes. Threatening gestures were made, and the confrontation then moved outside. Alexio F. also appeared there. During the brief but violent confrontation, Jay-Ronne was stabbed in the neck. He was seriously injured and taken to hospital. The next day, he died from his injuries after life support was stopped. The stabbing caused major unrest in Amsterdam-Zuidoost and became nationally known as the first fatal case directly linked to a drill rap feud. After the stabbing, Alexio F. and Yamanney A. turned themselves in to the police. The Public Prosecution Service initially prosecuted them for murder, but both the district court and the court of appeal found no proof of a pre-planned murder. The case was therefore treated as manslaughter. Yamanney A. was acquitted, because the court considered his actions defensive in nature. Alexio F. was convicted. The court of appeal ruled that he had run after Jay-Ronne and stabbed him from behind in the neck with an outstretched arm. By doing so, the court found, he used more force than was necessary, even though the confrontation took place in a self-defence situation in which Jay-Ronne himself had also drawn a machete. Because Alexio F. had psychiatric disorders and was considered to have limited intellectual functioning, he was sentenced under adolescent criminal law. In the first trial, he received 20 months of juvenile detention and a PIJ measure, a form of juvenile TBS. On appeal, on 10 May 2022, that sentence was increased to 24 months of juvenile detention and a PIJ measure. The death of Jay-Ronne Grootfaam became an important moment in the debate about knife possession, youth violence and the role of drill rap conflicts on social media.
