Kelvin Maynard (32) shot dead on Langbroekdreef. Former professional footballer.

Kelvin Maynard, a 32-year-old former professional footballer, was shot dead on the evening of Wednesday, 18 September 2019, on the Langbroekdreef in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. Maynard was driving his Volkswagen Golf at around 20:35 when he slowed down at a traffic light. At that moment, a scooter or motor scooter carrying two helmeted people pulled up beside him. The passenger, believed to have been the shooter, opened fire before Maynard could get away. After the shooting, the two perpetrators fled on the scooter. Maynard was seriously wounded and appears to have lost control of his car, after which his Volkswagen came to a stop against the façade of the Anton fire station on the Langbroekdreef. Emergency services tried to resuscitate him, but he died shortly afterwards from his injuries. Kelvin Maynard had been a professional footballer for many years and played for clubs including FC Volendam, FC Emmen and teams abroad; at the time of his death he was playing for Alphense Boys. Police quickly treated the killing as a targeted assassination and searched for two perpetrators on a scooter, with witnesses describing a driver wearing a dark helmet and a passenger wearing a light-coloured helmet. In November 2019, several men were arrested during the investigation, including a 28-year-old man from Amsterdam and a 22-year-old Amsterdam resident, but they were ultimately not prosecuted for the murder. In June 2020 it was reported that the investigation had been closed without results: four arrested men had been released and were no longer suspected of involvement in the liquidation. The case later resurfaced in the investigation into the criminal network around Surinamese-Dutch suspect Siegfried “Piet” W. The Public Prosecution Service suspects that Maynard’s death was connected to a stolen shipment of 400 kilos of cocaine and also sees a possible link with the killing of 23-year-old Genciël Feller in Curaçao on 2 September 2019. Piet W. was later suspected of involvement in the murder of Kelvin Maynard. In 2022 the investigation was reopened after new information emerged about a possible link with that other killing; under the direction of the National Public Prosecutor's Office, the national detective service has since been examining whether Maynard's death is connected to the killing of Feller. On 11 October 2022 a 53-year-old man was arrested in that context, suspected of involvement in both murders as well as large-scale cocaine trafficking. The National Public Prosecutor's Office is offering 20,000 euros for information leading to a solution. Based on publicly available sources, no one has yet been convicted for the shooting on the Langbroekdreef; the case therefore remains without a final criminal conviction for either the shooters or the person who ordered the killing, despite later suspicions and alleged links to international drug trafficking.
