Stabbed to death in broad daylight in busy street.

On Friday, 5 July 2019, 29-year-old Jurick Felipa was fatally stabbed in the Warmoesstraat in the centre of Amsterdam, in the Red Light District. The emergency report came in at around 16:40, and Felipa later died in hospital from his injuries. According to available reports, Felipa had cycled from the Oudebrugsteeg into the Warmoesstraat while Glen S., then 49 years old and from Almere, was walking there. The two men passed each other at close range. Witnesses said Glen S. called something out to Felipa, after which Felipa parked his bicycle and walked towards him. Almost immediately, Glen S. began stabbing him with a knife. Felipa collapsed and fell to the ground. Glen S. fled after the stabbing, but was later arrested on the Brouwersgracht. Shortly after the incident, camera footage of the stabbing was shared on social media, which police and the victim’s relatives described as extremely painful. The criminal case did not show that Glen S. had acted according to a premeditated plan, so the court treated the killing as manslaughter rather than murder. A few days after the stabbing, it also emerged that Glen S. had threatened his neighbour in Almere on the same day, apparently without a clear reason. During the trial, Glen S. barely cooperated: he was assigned a lawyer but refused to speak himself, leaving both the court and the victim’s family without a clear explanation of his motive. Experts concluded that Glen S. suffered from a mental disorder, avoided help, and had previously been convicted of violent offences. The Public Prosecution Service demanded ten years in prison and compulsory psychiatric treatment under a TBS order. On 22 September 2020, the Amsterdam District Court sentenced Glen S. to eight years in prison and TBS with compulsory treatment for the fatal stabbing of Jurick Felipa and the threat made in Almere. The appeal added a year. On 5 July 2023 the Amsterdam court of appeal rejected the plea of (putative) excessive self-defence, found Glen S. to have diminished responsibility, and imposed nine years in prison plus a hospital order with compulsory treatment.
