Fatal stabbing at Tugelaweg

Police arrested a 38-year-old man from Amsterdam for possible involvement in a fatal stabbing in Amsterdam-East. The incident happened on April 14 in the evening, near a basketball court on Tugelaweg, after an argument or fight. The victim, a 54-year-old man from Amsterdam, was found there with severe injuries. Emergency services tried to help him, but he later died from his wounds. Another person had previously been arrested in connection with the case, but that person was later released after no longer being considered a suspect. The 38-year-old suspect remains in custody and has been presented to an investigating judge. The investigation into what exactly happened and the motive is still ongoing. The victim is Jerry Texel (54); the suspect is 38-year-old Giovany W., who denies it. According to prosecutors the row began in Cafe Oost on Krugerplein over a debt of 400 euros. Texel stood up for a friend and punched W., giving him a nosebleed, after which W. shouted that Texel should die. Camera footage shows Texel running away with W. following him; during that flight Texel may have been struck by a Canta microcar, after which he was stabbed twice in the neck. DNA from both the victim and the suspect was found on a knife and a knife holder recovered nearby. At the preliminary hearing on 11 August 2026 W. remained silent; a further hearing was set for 20 October 2026 and he remains in custody.
