Italian woman killed by partner

The 45-year-old Italian woman found dead in a flat on Madurastraat in Amsterdam's Indische Buurt in April 2026 has been identified as Ilenia Panzolini. She came from the Italian village of Montefiascone, about a hundred kilometres north of Rome, and had moved to Amsterdam with her husband to build a new life. The investigation has established that her 46-year-old husband, Antonio L., called the police himself after her death; officers found Panzolini in the flat with her throat cut. L. was arrested as the main suspect. At a first hearing he claimed he had eaten poisoned biscuits shortly before the violence, leaving him unable to control himself, and that there had been a struggle in which his wife grabbed a taser. Prosecutors say that account raises many questions: someone else who ate the same biscuits was unaffected, and because no other injuries were found on the victim, a struggle cannot be established. Shortly before calling the police L. allegedly phoned someone in Italy; that witness had yet to be interviewed. A knife found in the bathroom is being examined. L. is held on a care ward of the prison in Zeist. The court extended his pre-trial detention by ninety days; the full restrictions initially imposed, under which he could only speak to his lawyer, have since been lifted. The investigation into what happened is ongoing; a further hearing is set for 2 October 2026. The case is receiving wide attention in both the Netherlands and Italy.
