Man shot dead on crowded terrace at NDSM-kade

On the afternoon of Friday 25 September 2026, shortly after three o'clock, a man was shot dead on the crowded terrace of a restaurant on the NDSM-kade in Amsterdam-Noord, close to the landing stage of the ferry from Centraal Station. The fine weather had drawn crowds, and children were among those who saw it happen. According to police, an argument between the victim, who was sitting on the terrace, and the suspect preceded the shooting. The suspect walked away, returned a short time later and shot the man dead. Witnesses say the suspect had walked past the terrace with an unleashed dog and the victim told him to put it on a lead; police could not yet confirm this. People on the terrace fled or hid under tables. The victim died at the scene, next to an empty pushchair; attempts to resuscitate him failed. Witnesses saw the gunman throw the weapon into the IJ; divers later recovered a firearm. Footage of the arrest, a few metres from the terrace, shows the man tying his dog to a lamppost and surrendering. Police believe there was a single suspect and are investigating whether he already had the gun on him or fetched it in between. Witnesses were taken to a police station by GVB bus to give statements. The victim was Marcel Blijd. According to the Custodial Institutions Agency, he worked at the Justitieel Complex Zaanstad prison, according to police sources as a former manager. No link to his work was seen at first, but according to the AD the suspect had been held in the prison where the victim worked. According to Het Parool, citing insiders, the suspect is Amin D., 37, from Noord, known locally as a gun enthusiast. He is said to have had earlier brushes with the law, including for attempting to shoot someone dead and for serious assault, and to have been held in the Bijlmerbajes and in Justitieel Complex Zaanstad, where he encountered the victim. Whether that played a role is under investigation. Police have not confirmed his identity. On Monday 28 September he was brought before the examining magistrate; he is being held under restrictions. The family said Blijd, who was on the terrace with his wife and daughter, was “opposed to every form of violence”.
