Man shot dead outside café on the Amstelveenseweg
In the early hours of Saturday 3 October 2026, at around half past two, 34-year-old Kishjuenkoemar ‘Kish’ Baboeram was shot dead on the pavement outside café Sao Paulo on the Amstelveenseweg, close to the Overtoomse Sluis. According to police, a party was under way in the café at the time. Acquaintances say he was shot in the head. Paramedics and the crew of a trauma helicopter tried to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene. According to witnesses, the gunman ran off towards the Vondelpark after the shooting; he may have a tattoo on his right hand. The area was sealed off for hours for forensic investigation. Police described it as “a very targeted action against the person”: “The shooter was after this man. He was not shot by accident.” They would not yet comment on a motive. Baboeram was originally from Den Helder and lived in Holendrecht, in Zuidoost. According to Het Parool, citing acquaintances, he had been in a long-running dispute with the gunman, possibly over money. The paper says he associated with criminals, but according to insiders he was not a serious criminal. On Saturday evening an arrest team raided a home on the Jan Pieter Heijestraat in West and arrested a 32-year-old man. He is being held under full restrictions. Police will not say whether he is the gunman.
