Somali man (33) shot dead in coffeeshop on Kloveniersburgwal

On November 19, 2023, 33-year-old Saïd Yusuf from Zoetermeer was shot in the head at close range in the Green Place coffeeshop on the Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam, an incident described by the court as a cold and pure execution. The motive for the violence lay in a conflict over large-scale drug trafficking and money between the victim and 41-year-old Fuad H., with the relationship deteriorating due to unpaid debts. On the day of the shooting, a meeting escalated when Yusuf snatched Fuad H.'s phone and refused to return it, prompting Fuad H. to hand a firearm to 23-year-old Mahamed el H., who then fired the fatal shots in a crowded establishment. Mahamed el H. identified himself to police as the shooter a day later, stating he acted as a sort of handyman for Fuad H., while Fuad H. was arrested in Germany shortly after the murder. On April 4, 2025, the court sentenced both men to thirteen years in prison for joint manslaughter and possession of a firearm, with the judge severely criticizing the perpetrators for committing the violence in the presence of many bystanders. The sentence held up on appeal. On 23 April 2026 the Amsterdam court of appeal again imposed thirteen years on the man who had handed over the firearm, for joint manslaughter and unlawful possession of a weapon. The court found it proven that he had given his co-defendant the gun and urged him to harm the victim; premeditation was not proven.
