Son assaults father resulting in death in Amstelveen

In January 2023, a severe incident of domestic violence occurred in Amstelveen involving Michel B. (then 36) and his 71-year-old father. B. had recently been released from a psychiatric crisis center when he attacked his father during a stay at the father's home. Under the influence of alcohol and suffering from a bipolar episode, B. repeatedly struck and kicked his father, leading to severe brain injuries and multiple fractures. The father passed away in the hospital 18 days later due to his injuries. Medical experts concluded that B. was completely legally insane at the time of the crime due to a psychosis. On December 1, 2023, the court in Amsterdam sentenced Michel B. to mandatory psychiatric treatment (tbs with compulsory care). No prison sentence was imposed as he was found not responsible for his actions, but long-term clinical treatment was deemed necessary for public safety.
