Hamid Altürk (42) beaten to death with paving stone at NDSM-plein

On August 27, 2023, a fatal violent incident occurred at the NDSM-Plein in Amsterdam-Noord, resulting in the death of 42-year-old Turkish truck driver Hamid Altürk . During a confrontation with a group of minors, Alturk was struck hard in the head with a heavy paving stone, after which he was taken to the hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries several days later. The investigation by the Amsterdam police led to two primary suspects, aged 14 and 16 at the time, who were linked to this fatal assault as well as other acts of violence in the city. In July 2024, the court delivered its verdict, sentencing both underage perpetrators to the maximum of one year in youth detention and mandatory youth psychiatric treatment (jeugd-tbs), as the violence was characterized as excessive and senseless. The event caused significant public outcry due to the young age of the offenders and the extreme level of violence committed at a popular public location in Amsterdam.
