Smadar Dahari killed by her partner in their home on Jozef Israëlskade

On the evening of Tuesday 9 June 2015, at around 22:23, police received a call that something was wrong at a flat on Jozef Israëlskade in Amsterdam-Zuid. The caller turned out to be the killer himself: Mustapha A., born in Morocco. He was waiting for the officers outside the door with blood on his hands — neighbours watched as he was led away like that. Inside lay his girlfriend Smadar Dahari, born in Amsterdam to a Dutch mother and a father born in Tel Aviv. She had been killed with a hammer and a knife. Mustapha A. was arrested and confessed almost immediately. Neighbours were able to say that both were psychiatric patients. What they did not know was that the couple had met in a psychiatric institution. They had been living together for six years at that point. The police investigation uncovered no motive, and it remained unexplained in court as well: according to the court there had never been any quarrel between the two, and they helped each other where they could. Mustapha A. said little about it himself; he would only say that he had killed his girlfriend 'out of love'. He was admitted for observation and examined by behavioural experts. They established that he suffered from a serious psychiatric disorder and had been in contact with mental health services since the age of nineteen. The court found him entirely not criminally responsible and imposed tbs with compulsory treatment.
